THE SUN didn't quite shine on our Christmas lunch this year but thesnow-drifts of 2010 were but a distant memory for Norma Shillinglaw andthe big turn-out of Mansfield U3A members and guests who appreciatedher organisation and the skills of the kitchen team and all the staffat the Oakham Suite.

A good crowd, good food, good drinks, good service and good company so what's more to say?

As refurbishment of the St John Centre Hall will not be finished in time for us to use it for the Scottish-themed New Year Social on 7th January it will be held at the Beacon Centre on Wood Street instead. This is part of St John's Church and used to be the church hall. See What's On.

Coffee Morning 23rd April

Help for Heroes, the charity raising money for wounded service personnel, will soon be getting a cheque from Mansfield and District U3A for £156, thanks to the generosity of members who enjoyed this year's coffee morning at The Towers.

Members' funds were boosted by a further £376 as a result of money generated by the tombola, raffle and other stalls - none of which would have been possible without the generous donations and work of members and visitors who supported the event. Nor the hard work and time contributed by the organising committee led by Sylvia Slack.

Introduction to Internet use

Several members have got on-line for the first time over the last few months through pilot sessions aimed at demystifying the internet for people who had never used a computer before so we hope we can build on that start.

We aren't planning a series of lectures but this Group could provide an opportunity to share experience, learning from others to help you to cut living costs by an average of £500 pa, to develop hobbies, to expand social frontiers and exercise your mind.

You won't need your own computer as free internet access is available at all public libraries, paid-for in part by your own council tax, with staff available to help when you want.

But librarians don't have the time to give hours of one-to-one support to start you from scratch - which is where Mansfield U3A could help.

Some of the topics this Group might like to discuss include:

What is the internet? (The Word Wide Web and emails are just some aspects.)
How to create your own email address.
How can it help you? (Save money and time buying products and services on-line at big discounts relative to shop prices, develop hobbies by exploring reference sources, join on-line groups to play chess, bridge and other games, store and share photographs with friends and family … )
Basic terminology in simple terms.
Web sites and how search engines help you find what you want.
Browsing web sites and pages. (How to open them and find them again quickly.)
(Hyper)-links. (How pages and sites connect and how they make it easy to find what you want.)
On-line ordering. (Price comparisons, legal protection, how to place secure orders using your credit card and how to get confirmation .)
Hands-on: Using a mouse and keyboards and how to navigate around popular websites.

Where and when
The group has access to a modern community computer suite at Albert Street, Stanton Hill on the first Wednesday morning of every month by courtesy of long-time member Terry Whitehead who is also chairman of the Notts CC-backed New Opportunities for Stanton Hill (NOSH).

Costs
Room hire, including exclusive use of ten modern computers would cost £16 per 2-hour session. Thus a minimum of six participants contributing £3 per session is the minimum for this to be viable.

(Five of the computers are also available to us free of charge every Wednesday afternoon from 1 - 3 but these are during public drop-in sessions when mentoring is difficult because we wouldn't want to distract other users - nor to be distracted.)

Leadership/co-ordination
The group will need a team of volunteers to mentor members on a maximum of a one-to-two basis so that everyone can learn at their own pace, exploring particular topics of interest.
Group Leaders and/or a bookings secretary will also be needed to ensure that sessions are not overcrowded and that enough mentors are always available.

(I will do what I can to help from time to time but I could not commit to a regular role, even if anyone wanted me to!)

Eastbourne Holiday

Most gardeners are probably keeping their feet up during this cold spell but there's much for those joining the Eastbourne holiday in May to look forward to as Marion Thornton has just finalised arrangements to visit these notable gardens:

Great Dixter - This famed garden was created by the late Christopher Lloyd and reflects his varied tastes. It is often featured in TV gardening programmes.
Pashley Manor - a quintessential English garden blending romantic landscaping, imaginative plantings and fine old trees, fountains, springs and large ponds.
Sheffield Park - noted for a magnificent 'Capability' Brown landscaped garden with waterfalls, cascades, four large lakes and a profusion of colour all year.
Leonardslee - vast collections of plants, predominantly Rhododendrons and Azaleas, conifers, award-winning camelias and other collections are features.
Wisley - home to the RHS and one of the great gardens of the world with huge and diverse plant collections covering fruit, vegetables, alpines and bulbs as well as herbaceous and woody plants.

Date Change for Luncheon Club

The Luncheon Club's monthly meeting dates will be on the fourth Thursday of every month with effect from February 2010 - apart from the Joyeux Noel Christmas lunch at Launay's in Edwinstowe, which will be on the third Thursday.

This change gained massive support from members at today's lunch as it reduces the clashes with other events that has been a problem for some.

I'll update the information on the main website (http://www.mansfield-u3a.org.uk/) as soon as possible and the full programme for 2010 will be available there, at the next main meeting and via email in due course.

Christmas Lunch 2010

Diners at this year's Christmas Lunch at the Derbyshire Hotel who chose salmon, which was swerved in an excellent shrimp sauce, and cheesecake fared better than traditionalists who went for the turkey and Christmas pud option - although both main courses were spoiled by very sub-standard, almost raw, vegetables.

The quality of the ambience and service and management apologies afterwards didn't make up for the Derbyshire's shortcomings so we won't be returning.

Our Christmas lunch for 2010 will be at the Masonic Hall - where several committee members have dined recently to a far higher standard - on Tuesday 30th November.

I'm delighted to say that I've now cleared the decks to make way for all the revisions interest group leaders will want me to post as soon as they have finished planning their 2010 programmes - so bring 'em on!

The two major revisions over the weekend were a new Holidays page, where Margaret Burlinson and I have been seeking a neat way to combine two pages into one and a new Links page to replace the old difficult-to-navigate one that had many dead entries.

So thanks to her for co-operating over her pages and thanks to all the Interest Group leaders for helping me to introduce some logic into the links.

I hope everyone likes these changes but don't hesitate to say anything you want!

Theatre Group announcement

The Theatre Group's next visit will be to:
ENJOY by Alan Bennett on Wednesday 17th March 2010.

Tickets are £14.60 each if I get 21 names on the list. At present, there are 17 - so 4 more names please to get the reduction from £16.

BUT I need names AND money for this at the January meeting.

The play is set in Leeds where an ageing couple are living in the city’s last back to back. A sociologist visits them on their last day before being rehoused in a brand new maisonette. Alison Steadman stars along with David Troughton.

NCC Library service offers to help i2i

I was delighted to get this email from the District Librarian offering support to help members use the Internet:

As per our discussion a few weeks ago I am writing to confirm that the library service would normally be able to offer free hour to one and a half hour training sessions on the following topics:
Computer Basics - parts of the computer and how it works, using the mouse and keyboard, producing, saving and printing a document
Using the internet
Setting up and using an email account
Some libraries such as Mansfield Woodhouse library also offer a basic introduction to using the Ancestry.com website for family history research. However availability of training sessions does vary per library and at the moment Mansfield library due to staffing shortages is not able to offer TRY IT sessions.

Regarding your query about whether staff would be able to assist someone wanting to book a holiday or buy an item online I think this would depend on staff availability and the level of competence of the person enquiring. The staff would not normally have time to do this for the person but could possibly spend about 10 minutes assisting them to do it themselves if they rang in advance to arrange this.

If the customer had not used the internet at all before but had basic IT skills we would normally prefer that they booked an introductory internet session as part of which they could look briefly at holiday booking or shopping websites but then should have the skills to make the booking or purchase the item themselves.

All libraries have free broadband access to the internet with a library membership card and pin number which is given at the point when customers join.

I hope this information is helpful and apologise for the delay in replying as I needed to clarify the situation regarding TRY IT training at Mansfield library (which has a separate management team).

So that seems to confirm what I hoped; there's easy access to free modern computers and support at every library but it would be better if 'customers' as they call users, at least knew enough to be able to get on-line without expecting staff to do everything for them.

I had a busy day yesterday taking my camera to the Luncheon Club's excellent visit to the Carnavon in Teversal, a pub that some people may remember as a tacky place to avoid. The new owners have brought about a transformation and it was one of our best lunches of the year:

Then. June Fell had asked me to look in at the inaugural meeting of her new Singing for Fun group in the evening in case there was enough happening to justify a photo here and for Recent Events on the main website.

I almost had to fight my way into the meeting room at the Rosemary St Baptist Chapel, such was the crowd that had arrived before me - and I was on time!

They were still sorting the basses from the sopranos when I left to save myself the embarrassment of having to sing for my supper - and them from having to hear me - but this new group has clearly got off to a magnificent start.
